Why HEIC is a problem

iPhones save photos as HEIC to keep them small. Windows, most websites and a lot of software still cannot open one — which is why a photo that looks fine on your phone arrives as an error everywhere else.

Read from the file itself
Photos are recognised by their contents, not their name, so a HEIC your computer labels as nothing still works.
Still on your device
The decoder runs in the page. Your photos are never sent anywhere.

Questions people ask

Why can't Windows open my iPhone photos?

iPhones save in HEIC, which stores the same picture in about half the space of a JPG but needs a decoder most systems do not ship. Converting to JPG trades some of that saving for a file every device and website can read.

Will the converted photo look worse?

At the default quality the difference is not visible on a normal photograph, and every pixel of resolution is kept. If you want no loss at all, choose PNG — the files are much larger. The quality slider only affects JPG and WebP.

What happens to Live Photos and bursts?

A HEIC can hold several frames. The main photograph — the one your phone shows — is the one converted, and if there were extra frames the page says how many were left behind rather than dropping them silently.

Do my photos get uploaded?

No. The HEIC decoder itself is downloaded to your browser and the photos are decoded there. Nothing is sent to us — we record only anonymous counts of how many images and how many bytes.
