What are you doing with it?
Format is a decision about where the picture is going, not about quality in the abstract.
- Putting it on a website
- Convert to WebP. It loads faster than everything else here and keeps transparency if the original had it.
- Emailing or sharing it
- Convert to JPG. Every device and every application opens it, and attachment limits stop being a problem.
- It needs a transparent background
- Convert to PNG or WebP. JPG cannot store transparency at all and will fill it with white.
- Sending it to a printer
- Keep PNG, or a high-quality JPG. Lossless means no compression artefacts show up at print size.
- Archiving the original
- Keep PNG. Every save of a JPG throws away a little more detail; PNG saves are identical every time.

Questions people ask
Does converting lose quality?
Going to PNG or lossless WebP: no, the pixels come out identical. Going to JPG or lossy WebP: a little, because those formats save space by discarding detail your eye is least likely to miss.
At the default quality the difference is invisible at normal viewing size. What does accumulate is repeated saving — convert from your original rather than from a copy you already converted once.
Which format is best for a website?
WebP, in almost every case. On the photo measured above it came out at 23 KB against the PNG's 269 KB — the same picture at 8% of the weight. Every browser in current use supports it.
What happens to a transparent background?
PNG and WebP keep it. JPG cannot store transparency at all, so converting to JPG fills those areas with a solid colour. If you need the cutout, stay on PNG or WebP — the background remover returns transparent PNGs for exactly this reason.
Is there a file size limit?
50 MB per image, the same for everyone. The conversion runs on your own device rather than on our servers, so the practical ceiling is your device's memory.
Do my images get uploaded?
No. The image is read by your browser, converted there and handed straight back to you. We record only anonymous usage data — which format went in, which came out — and never the picture itself.
