JPG or PNG?

Scans and photographs → JPG
Several times smaller for the same page, and the softening is invisible on a photograph.
Text, diagrams, flat colour → PNG
No compression blur around small text or thin lines, and often smaller than JPG for a page that is mostly white.
Several pages arrive as a ZIP
Numbered in page order, so an archiver lists them 01, 02, 03 rather than 1, 10, 11, 2.

What it actually does

The size shown is the size you get

Changing the format or the size re-renders the whole document, so the total beside the button is measured rather than estimated — the same rule the compressor on this site holds to.

Pages are never upscaled past 4×
A page whose contents are a low-resolution scan gains nothing from being rendered at print size except a larger file. The ceiling is applied quietly and the resulting size tells you what happened.
White behind every page
A PDF page has no background of its own, and JPG cannot carry transparency. Without a white fill first, every page would come out with black behind the text — which is exactly what a converter that skips this step hands you.
Nothing is uploaded
The rendering is done by your own browser and the ZIP is assembled there too. We record an anonymous count of pages and bytes — never a filename and never an image.

Questions people ask

Which size should I pick?

Standard, unless you know otherwise. 1600 pixels on the long edge is readable on any screen and prints acceptably at postcard size. Pick Print only if the image is going onto paper at full size — it is roughly 300 DPI on A4 and the files are several times larger.

Can I get just one page?

Pull the page out first with the PDF splitter, then bring the one-page PDF here — it downloads as a single image rather than a ZIP.

The text in my image is fuzzy

Try PNG, and try the next size up. An image is pixels: text that was sharp at any zoom in the PDF becomes a fixed grid of dots here, and JPG adds a little blur around the edges of small letters. If you need the text to stay text, keep the PDF.

Do my files get uploaded?

No. Your browser opens the PDF, draws each page and encodes the images. Nothing about the document reaches us — only an anonymous count that a conversion happened.
