- bit b
- A binary digit, the smallest unit of data. Eight bits make one byte, and bits per second measure data transfer speed.
- nibble nibble
- Four bits, or half a byte. A rare unit outside hexadecimal notation.
- byte B
- Eight bits, the standard unit of computer memory and storage. A text character is roughly one byte.
- kilobit kb
- A thousand bits in the decimal standard. Used for data transfer rates in networking and telecommunications.
- kilobyte kB
- A thousand bytes in the decimal standard. Drive manufacturers use decimal kilobytes, but Windows reports storage in binary kibibytes — this discrepancy is why your drive shows less space than advertised.
- kibibyte KiB
- 1,024 bytes in the binary standard. Windows, macOS and most operating systems report file sizes in binary kibibytes, even though drive makers advertise in decimal kilobytes — this gap between advertised and reported is why storage always appears smaller than expected.
- megabit Mb
- A million bits in the decimal standard. Internet speeds are often quoted in megabits per second.
- megabyte MB
- A million bytes in the decimal standard. Photos, small videos and document files are typically measured in megabytes.
- mebibyte MiB
- 1,048,576 bytes in the binary standard. Operating systems and RAM are reported in mebibytes, though everyday usage often conflates it with the decimal megabyte.
- gigabit Gb
- A billion bits in the decimal standard. Modern network speeds like gigabit Ethernet are measured in gigabits per second.
- gigabyte GB
- A billion bytes in the decimal standard. Hard drives, USB drives and most digital storage are marketed in gigabytes.
- gibibyte GiB
- 1,073,741,824 bytes in the binary standard. Computer RAM and system storage often report sizes in gibibytes.
- terabit Tb
- A trillion bits in the decimal standard. High-speed data center connections are measured in terabits per second.
- terabyte TB
- A trillion bytes in the decimal standard. Large hard drives, data backups and server storage are measured in terabytes.
- tebibyte TiB
- 1,099,511,627,776 bytes in the binary standard. Large system storage and high-capacity drives report sizes in tebibytes.
- petabyte PB
- A quadrillion bytes in the decimal standard. Data centers and cloud storage providers measure their total capacity in petabytes.
