One thousandth of a litre, the base unit of cooking volume. Liquids and tiny precise amounts are measured in them.
liter L
A thousand millilitres, the metric unit for cooking volume. Most recipe liquids and oil volumes are stated in them.
deciliter dL
A tenth of a litre, 100 millilitres. Cooking measurements in some European recipes.
centiliter cL
A hundredth of a litre, 10 millilitres.
US cup cup (US)
236.6 millilitres. The standard measuring cup in American recipes. A US cup is smaller than an imperial cup.
US legal cup cup (US legal)
240 millilitres, used in FDA nutritional labeling. Different from the measuring cups used in actual recipes.
metric cup cup (metric)
250 millilitres, used in Australian and some European recipes. Exactly one quarter of a litre.
imperial cup cup (UK)
284.1 millilitres. The UK and Commonwealth measuring cup, larger than a US cup.
US tablespoon tbsp (US)
14.79 millilitres. Larger than a metric tablespoon. Three teaspoons equal one tablespoon in US recipes.
metric tablespoon tbsp (metric)
15 millilitres. Slightly larger than a US tablespoon, and the standard in metric recipes.
imperial tablespoon tbsp (UK)
17.76 millilitres. The UK tablespoon, larger than both US and metric versions.
US teaspoon tsp (US)
4.93 millilitres. One third of a US tablespoon. Used for small precise amounts in American recipes.
metric teaspoon tsp (metric)
5 millilitres. Used in metric recipes, slightly larger than a US teaspoon.
imperial teaspoon tsp (UK)
5.92 millilitres. The UK teaspoon, slightly larger than the US version.
US fluid ounce fl oz (US)
29.57 millilitres. The US liquid ounce for measuring volume. Not the same as weight ounces.
imperial fluid ounce fl oz (UK)
28.41 millilitres. The UK fluid ounce, slightly smaller than a US fluid ounce.
US pint pt (US)
473.18 millilitres, 16 US fluid ounces. Used for large liquid volumes in American recipes.
US quart qt (US)
946.35 millilitres, four US cups. Used for very large recipe quantities in American cooking.
US gallon gal (US)
3785.41 millilitres, the largest common US cooking measure. Used for bulk ingredients.
imperial pint pt (UK)
568.26 millilitres, 20 imperial fluid ounces. Used for large volumes in UK recipes.
