Common temperature conversions
Each of these has its own page with the formula, a values table and both directions.
Every temperature unit on this page
- degree Celsius °C
- Zero at the freezing point of water and 100 at its boiling point, at standard pressure. The everyday scale almost everywhere outside the United States.
- degree Fahrenheit °F
- Water freezes at 32 and boils at 212. Used for weather and cooking in the United States and a few of its neighbours.
- kelvin K
- The SI base unit. Zero is absolute zero, and a kelvin is the same size as a degree Celsius, so the two differ only by 273.15.
- degree Rankine °R
- Absolute zero measured in Fahrenheit-sized degrees. Still used in some American thermodynamics work.
- degree Réaumur °Ré
- Freezing at zero, boiling at 80. Obsolete, but it survives in a few European cheese and syrup recipes.
