- kilometer km
- A thousand metres, and the unit road distances are measured in almost everywhere outside the United States and the United Kingdom.
- meter m
- The SI base unit of length, defined since 1983 as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
- decimeter dm
- A tenth of a metre, ten centimetres.
- centimeter cm
- A hundredth of a metre. The everyday metric unit for anything you can hold — body measurements, paper, screens.
- millimeter mm
- A thousandth of a metre, and the working unit of engineering drawings, rainfall and camera focal lengths.
- micrometer µm
- A millionth of a metre, also called a micron. Human hair is roughly 70 of them across.
- nanometer nm
- A billionth of a metre. Visible light runs from about 380 to 750 of them.

- 1,760 yards, or exactly 1,609.344 metres. Road distances in the United States and the United Kingdom are measured in them.

- Three feet, defined since 1959 as exactly 0.9144 metres. Fabric, gardens and American football fields.
- foot ft
- Twelve inches, exactly 0.3048 metres. Height, room dimensions and aviation altitude worldwide.
- inch in
- Exactly 2.54 centimetres since the international agreement of 1959. Screens, pipes, paper and tyres are still sized in them.
- nautical mile nmi
- Exactly 1,852 metres — one minute of latitude. The unit of sea and air navigation, and the basis of the knot.
- fathom ftm
- Six feet, used for water depth on nautical charts.
- furlong fur
- An eighth of a mile, 220 yards. Horse racing distances are still given in them.
- chain ch
- 66 feet, the surveyor's chain. A cricket pitch is one chain long.
- rod rd
- 16.5 feet, a quarter of a chain. Still appears in older land deeds.

- Four inches, and the unit horses are measured in.
- mil mil
- A thousandth of an inch, also called a thou. Circuit board traces, plastic film and paint thickness.

- A 72nd of an inch, the desktop publishing point. Type sizes are set in them.

- Twelve points, a sixth of an inch. Column widths.
- angstrom Å
- A ten-billionth of a metre. Atomic radii and bond lengths are quoted in them.
- league lea
- Three miles — historically about an hour's walk. Obsolete outside literature.
- astronomical unit AU
- Exactly 149,597,870,700 metres — the average distance from the Earth to the Sun.
- light year ly
- The distance light travels in a Julian year, about 9.46 trillion kilometres.
- parsec pc
- About 3.26 light years — the distance at which one astronomical unit subtends one arcsecond.
